HIST 448: Latino Images in Film

Latino Images and Self-Representations in the U.S. Film and Television

U.S. films and television have played major roles in shaping the ways in which Latina/e/o people are seen in the United States, throughout the world, and by Latinos themselves. What are the positive and negative ways in which U.S. films and TV have presented images of Latina/e/o people? How have Latinos reacted to these images? To what extent have U.S. film and TV allowed Latina/e/o people to create self-representations of their own life experiences? This course will examine narrative dramas, documentaries, and animated media from the silent film period to digital streaming to contextualize the different ways U.S. film and TV have enabled different representations of Latinos.
