This talk examines the interwoven evolutionary and cultural histories of the broncs of American rodeo. The “wild and wooly” characteristics of broncs define their cultural significance: the more dangerous one is, the more spectators are likely to interpret the contestant riding it as masculine and authentically Western. This talk assesses that cultural dynamic by examining broncs as the product of human-led evolution and as biotechnologies who labored to fulfill cultural expectations.
