After Hitler invaded the Soviet Union, German troops moved swiftly to conquer vast lands and cities containing the country's richest agricultural and most important industries. In one of the greatest feats of the war, the Soviet state evacuated millions of people along with factories, food, and herds thousand of miles east to safety. After long and dangerous journeys in unheated boxcars under heavy bombardment, workers began to reconstruct a new industrial base, churning out the armaments, tanks, and airplanes the Red Army needed to drive the Nazis all the way back to Berlin.
