This talk will explore different approaches to the creation and preservation of “ego-documents” written by late Ottoman participants in WWI. Focusing on three distinct but linked narratives found among the papers of Kuşçubaşı Eşref, Prof. Fortna shall attempt to draw out the authors’ approaches to and intentions behind the act of writing.
