    The Department of History offers advanced degrees in a variety of sub-fields:

    Modern Europe
    Early Europe
    Latin America
    United States
    Middle Eastern Histories (Ph.D. Only)
    Asia (M.A. Only)

    We also offer minors in both Comparative Women’s History and World Comparative History, in addition to opportunities to minor in any of our subfields. In addition, students also engage in interdisciplinary work in related departments, such as Anthropology, Women’s Studies and Modern Languages.

    Since 1996, our students have received over 160 grants, awards, and fellowships for individual research, including a number of Fulbright and Fulbright-Hays fellowships. They have presented at professional conferences in the U.S., Canada, England, Spain, Germany, Mexico and the Netherlands.

    The Department of History has 26 ranked faculty members that teach and mentor on average 100 graduate students. Within our subfields, students engage in research in Labor History, the History of Sexuality, Social and Cultural History, as well as Political and Economic, and Diplomatic History.

    Teaching Opportunities:
    The Department of History regards undergraduate teaching as an integral part of our involvement in the University of Arizona community. Our faculty and graduate students have received Excellence in Teaching Awards from the University as well as from the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences.
    Students who are GATs have the opportunity to lead discussion sections in a variety of courses, such as Europe in the Modern World, Colonial Latin America, and World History. In addition, graduate students who have completed the Comprehensive Exams are encouraged to teach stand-alone courses in the summers and during the semester. Courses that our graduate students have offered include:
    HIST 317: History of Modern Ireland
    HIST 454: History of the Spanish Inquisition
    HIST 254: History of Women in the United States
    HIST 368: Colonial Mexico
    HIST 351: Race and Class in Latin America
